For the record, punching a Nazi under fascism is patriotic.
This post is was brought to you by Nazis outside a performance of The Diary of Anne Frank in Michigan.

This would be a good time to read it tbh
No matter how many people voted for him they did not vote to have their democracy replaced with an autocracy. Once it is clear that is what you have, then you have had a coup and the government is illegitimate.
Here in Norway we were literally invaded, the line between before and after was clear. For the US it will not be as clear. The voters did give this government a wide and devastating mandate, but that mandate did not include creating a dictatorship. At some point that line might be crossed. He keeps on “joking” that he will. Because apparently these people think this is funny.
There is a reason why the US always struggled with who was a “freedom fighter” and who was a “terrorist”, it all comes down to who you think is the legitimate government. And that isn’t always clear. And tbh might also change over time. But one thing is for sure to me: under fascism, punching a Nazi is patriotic.
I hate this.
They are putting a probable Russian asset to lead the US intelligence community, a child sex trafficker to lead the justice department and an antivaxer in charge of healthcare. Y’all. None of this is normal.
One part of my brain says I’m paranoid, the other listens to a member of the senate saying that several top level democrats are concerned about their physical safety. And Elon is negotiating with Iran.
@Patricia and people keep saying "4 years" like it's a given there's going to be more elections
@mensrea I can’t even imagine a year from now
@Patricia You're not paranoid. The plan is to break everything and weaken the U.S. as quickly and thoroughly as possible, demoralize the people, cause absolute chaos, and then reconstruct a government that is a theocratic, plutocratic dictatorship. People like Steve Bannon have been telling everyone this for years. This is what it looks like in practice. It's going to be chaos, abuse of the military, mass prosecutions, raids and deportations, blowing up the budget, and rampant corruption involving enemies. This is what Americans said they wanted with their collective "Fuck Everyone"
@Nonya_Bidniss this feels like a bad dream, like I’ll wake up and think “Ok, that was a bit out there, Patricia” and laugh while President Harris holds a press conference about something that won’t kill anyone.
@Patricia Sorry. Your dreams are going to probably be far more pleasant than real life for anyone in the U.S. sphere of influence who is not an oligarch or a dictator (or a religious extremist or a white nationalist) for the foreseeable future.
@Patricia I know people roll their eyes at the analogy but people literally wrote opinion pieces in newspapers about how Hitler wasn't really serious about the antisemitism, it was just to rile up his base.
@Patricia don’t forget a Fox News host investigated for sexual assault in charge of the military
@bascule well shit, I missed that one
@BrianJopek@home.social @Patricia hat tip to @BrianJopek@mastodon.world for the toon
@Patricia Counterpoint: also patriotic when not under fascism?
Relatedly, this routine has been stuck in my head for years now:

@randomphrase I have been struggling with that one, but like I heard someone say online “you never see anyone steal food”, I think perhaps “you never witness a Nazi being punched”. But I’ve never had that boundary challenged irl. But if fascists take my country, then the lines are much clearer.
I seem to remember he was very convincing last time, I’ll give him another go.
