Spent four decades not sleeping a wink – until a doctor took my #insomnia seriously.
Insomnia is not a grievance made by difficult women. It’s a life-threatening condition that often stems from a physical issue many doctors refuse to see

The should be a beacon of what this country stands for.

But …
My mum is suffering from dreadful right now. We got some Nytol, but the leaflet says to check if you have problems. My mum has stage 4 kidney disease, along with being on blood-thinning meds and is currently being weaned off dihydrocodeine.

On her behalf, I sent a request to the docs, and she got an appointment for a month’s time. I sent another request asking for a phone call. She got a reply telling her to go to the walk-in clinic.
Mum is and needs a lift to the docs. She couldn’t get hold of her neighbour to take her, so I’m going to drive 2 hours to take her. I don’t mind (she’s my mum!) but I hate that this is where we are. And it has to be Thursday as I can’t do tomorrow. And yes, I tried my local pharmacist, and online 111 doesn’t seem to cater for this. All we need to know is if sleeping meds are safe for her to take.
Don’t necessarily need any comments, just needed to vent a bit. ARGH!

Today the New York Times published "What Is Cognitive Shuffling?" nytimes.com/2025/03/20/well/mi . In February, BBC Science Focus published an article on the technique: sciencefocus.com/wellbeing/how
I was interviewed for both pieces.

The #cognitiveShuffle has gotten a lot of attention in the last 1.5 years.
This tiktok video by Dr. Scott A. Walter has had over 609,000 likes.
tiktok.com/@denverskindoc/vide. After that video, a whole bunch of other tiktok and youtube videos were made about it.

For those who want something more in-depth, later this year a chapter of mine and Sheryl Guloy's on the theory behind the cognitive shuffle and a description of the technique will be published in a Cambridge University Press book, Sleep Theories. The chapter is called

"Towards a somnolent information-processing theory: Understanding the human sleep-onset control
system from an integrative design-oriented perspective"
