Could it be possible that Mastercard and Visa might consider leaving Europe at some point in the future?

@ueeu oooh you tease me so
@ueeu Thats what the digital euro is for
@ueeu I do not see how you would conclude that on the basis of that Verge article. Visa and Mastercard are (finaly) shutting down operations in russia. Thats all.
@ueeu I dislike how this post is framed. Don’t give Click-Bait a try.
Oh no, sorry, we didn't mean to. Why do you think it's clickbait?
We posted this a few minutes after our post about WERO (https://social.vivaldi.net/@ueeu/114225068695305633), so it's related to the thoughts that came out of that post, and more broadly to the issue of European sovereignty.
And this article about Vista/Mastercard suspending their operations in the Russian market is useful to show what can happen when your system relies on foreign powers that decide to cut off your access.
European officials have been talking a lot lately about Europe's dependence on US technology and financial systems, including Visa and Mastercard.
About the link between Wero, Visa/Mastercard and sanctions on Russia, there is another article:
"While this may seem straightforward, successfully implementing Wero could result in losses for Visa and Mastercard, potentially costing them billions in fees from European merchants every time a consumer uses their cards.
More importantly, this development reflects Europe’s growing concern over its dependence on U.S. financial infrastructure.
The anxiety increased following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine when Visa and Mastercard swiftly suspended their services in Russia, prompting other nations to reconsider their reliance on these networks."

@ueeu If Europe invades a neighbour. Then, after 11 years, maybe, I guess.
Intentional or not this post is manipulative
Why manipulative?
@ueeu my biggest fear about splitting with US with this boycott is that all transactions are handled by visa or MasterCard and PayPal also has a presence. We need a European alternative to take the place of this functionality
@hydrabenny @ueeu in Spain many online shops (ECI, IKEA, MediaMarkt, Decathlon, AliExpress, Amazon, etc.) accept now Bizum, which doesn't rely on VISA/Mastercard
@zgjavi @hydrabenny @ueeu Just like many places online in Sweden you can pay by Swish, direct transfer from your bank or a service like Klarna. You can even pay by Swish at larger places like Ikea as well as small local restaurants.
Still, it is kind of insane we have no EU based debit card provider.
@zgjavi @hydrabenny @ueeu it’s time for Wero to be finsihed.
It’s based on iDEAL which we have been using in the Netherlands since 2003.

@hydrabenny @ueeu I think an European alternative exists already with Wero (https://wero-wallet.eu/)
@hydrabenny @ueeu not perfect but at least, it's a possible alternate competitor.
