I often hear that got into trouble after they let Brendan Eich go, that that was the point where political voices overrode technical merit. In fact, these projects have a lot of momentum, these things take years to work out. It's actually the strategic leadership of Brendan Eich, who was CTO since 2005, that got Mozilla into trouble.
Today I came across a nice example of this from 2007.
