I wonder how much progress the #fediverse could have and grow in quality if the @EUCommission could seriously fund good non-profit projects that already make an interoperable web possible: @Mastodon , @pixelfed , @pleroma , @peertube , @gotosocial etc.
There are talks about BILLIONS of euros to rearm Europe, which seems justified to me. But it seems that no one puts on the table how to seriously address the problem of disinformation campaigns that undermine democracies. I found the EU project EU vs Disinfo https://euvsdisinfo.eu/, but they didn't dare to create at least a profile here.
Let's perpetuate the cycle of walled gardens run by cool tech bros and their profit seeking businesses. It is very comfortable.
@everton137 @EUCommission @Mastodon @pixelfed @pleroma @peertube @gotosocial
The EU should be funding free and open source, pro-social technology on a very large scale as a hedge against the technologies that are currently undermining democracies around the world. As a European citizen, I would be very much in favour of this, and I would return to the EU after a career in the US tech industry to work on it.
Not to mention the milions of government computers running Microsoft Windows...

I am actually not sure where the sustainable path of development exactly is.
While I totally support funding for OS projects and the fediverse with public money, I hestitate to think that the mentioned platforms shoud become the new "mainstraim". If you remember the discussions surrounding facebook's announcement of Threads ... when Feidverse becomes mainstream, the big tech will follow and squeeze and destriy it...
@dreirik, is this really an unavoidable consequence? I know what happened to XMPP, but did the same happen to email? Despite corporate dominance, email remains a universally used protocol across different business models.
Imagine if I couldn’t send my “ugly duck” email from my own server to Gmail or Outlook. That’s essentially what’s happening now by blocking interoperability on the social web. Yet, millions are already in the Fediverse.
If this is a real threat, how do we protect the Fediverse? I believe we need more funding - not just to go mainstream, but to fix fundamental UI and technical issues that make life unnecessarily hard for users. These problems require resources, yet discussions in the most popular Fediverse apps often take years to turn into action or have solutions.
@everton137 @dreirik technically you can send emails from any server, but Google is going to see it as spam so in practice we are tied to big providers
@sotneStatue @dreirik really? I haven't used Gmail anymore for more than 10 years. If an email server is correctly setup, I've never heard about this problem. I don't think Google boycott other emails.
