Another form of propaganda we don't acknowledge: advertising.
@Woodchaz@social.vivaldi.net @StillIRise1963@mastodon.world Im glad you just acknowledged it. Here's another such acknowledgement: Pharmaceutical and betting ads are obvious examples of profiteering propaganda to the detriment of the community. Why are they legal? Because of capitalist propaganda and lobbying.

The whole concept of advertising makes me ill. I worked in the newspaper business for years and it absolutely affected what I could write. As the industry declined, the remaining advertisers had more and more influence. Then there's what it does to our attitudes. Nothing is ever enough. You're always deficient & they always promise the moon. And of course don't deliver I never had the slightest desire to "shop like a billionaire."
@Woodchaz @StillIRise1963
When I was at school in the 60's I remember a schoolmate saying every advert was an advert for capitism. I thought at the time yeh, that's pretty much right... And still do.
@davejackson @StillIRise1963
Sometimes I wonder how much of what I think I know came from advertising.
@Woodchaz @davejackson @StillIRise1963
I'm not sure what the answer is, though I'll bet you could get an answer from nine out of ten dentists.
@johnlogic @Woodchaz @davejackson @StillIRise1963
Do you think it’s important to eat a good breakfast? That breakfast is the most important meal of the day?
That piece of common wisdom was literally the invention of the breakfast food industry: https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2016/nov/28/breakfast-health-america-kellog-food-lifestyle
People need to eat. Different people find that eating at different times of day works best for them. There’s nothing special about breakfast whatsoever. Complete fabrication.
@inthehands @johnlogic @Woodchaz @davejackson @StillIRise1963 Kellog was at the forefront of this movement with his retreats.
@Woodchaz @StillIRise1963 Only difference: One wants you to buy a thing... a specific point and purpose fulfilled (something specific; from a Capitalist for Capitalism) the other wants you to think/believe in something (like an idea)
(As long as it makes the advertiser money they don't care if you actually believe their BS or not)
@Aviva_Gary @StillIRise1963
You're inherently deficient if they can make you "need" something you were doing fine without. The main belief they want us to have is that enough must never be enough.
