TARANAKI TOLL-GATES
It is understood that in pursuance of powers which he may exercise the Minister of Public Works (the Hon. J. G. Coates) is taking the steps which are necessary for the abolition of the toll-gates in as from 1st April.

Extended caption: The gates, installed to raise money for roads, were removed on the decision of the main Highways Board and the County Councils. Since their inception the gross receipts, excluding the financial year just ended, were over £30,000. Description: Shows a toll collector receiving payment from the driver of a car in the foreground, facing the camera and standing in front of a wooden-clad, single-storey building. A motorcycle with sidecar, another motorcycle and a motor vehicle can also be seen facing away from the camera, along with a large sign “TOLL GATE” above the gate in the background.
