A group of black-and-white photos: Wealth From New Zealand’s Swamp Lands: Milling Native Flax At North Island. Flaxmilling on a large scale is successfully carried on at Miranui, where over 4000 acres of swamp at the mouth of the Manawatu River is being worked. Eleven miles of light railway have been constructed for transporting the green flax to the mill, at which seven strippers are in operation. An area of 180 acres is used as a drying ground, and over 200 men are constantly employed. 1. Binding bundles of flax. 2. A flax-cutter at work. 3. Loading the fibre into a dray after washing. 4. Fibre drying on wires after it has been spread on the ground for four or five days. 5. Utilising waste to make binder twine for baling the finished product. 6. Fibre presser in operation. 7.
